Lees-McRae College and AllSecure Networks’ Network Metal Detector Implementation by Classic Networking Incorporated
Executive Summary
Founded in 1900, Lees-McRae College, located in Banner Elk, North Carolina, is a four-year liberal arts college with over 700 students from 20 different states. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and is a member of the Appalachian College Association. Recently the school experienced network challenges due to infected student computers and it did not have any type of control system in place to thwart the rising problems. Classic Networking, Inc. provided an affordable and time sensitive solution via its product, AllSecure Networks Network Metal Detector (NetMD).
The Business Challenge
The Director of Academic Computing, Thomas Straughn, recognized that the majority of students were operating personal computers that were infected with spyware and viruses and the computers did not have current anti-virus software nor had the operating systems been updated.
Lees-McRae College’s residential network was always slow and bogged down due to infected machines on the network. It did not have any type of Network Access Control (NAC) and the majority of problems were from spyware and viruses.
Straughn understood the value a Network Access Control solution would bring to their environment. Straughn explored several solutions including free ware NAC solutions as well as the extreme opposite, high-end expensive solutions. While the free ware obviously cost nothing it required large time commitments and valuable human resources to properly maintain. The high-end solutions proved to have the necessary functionality but were too expensive.
The Solution
AllSecure Networks NetMD solution provided a “middle of the road” option for Straughn, which would help him save two valuable resources: time and money. It has the functionality to deny users access to the network when usage polices are violated without actually shutting down the user’s port, making NetMD a more efficient solution in a hub environment. Classic Networking understood the customer’s unique environment and realized specific NAC solutions would be much more than what Thomas really needed.
Classic Networking went onsite and implemented AllSecure Networks NetMD without having to make any changes to the infrastructure. Through Classic Networking’s many years focused on designing and maintaining network infrastructures they understood Lees-McRae’s network and found the best way to implement the NetMD solution.
Classic Networking has been successfully implementing NAC solutions for over three years and understands that each school’s environment is unique. The Classic Networking sales rep listened to what Straughn needed out of a NAC solution and made a recommendation on what would fit his environment and business needs best.
